First of all, make sure your Askimet settings are set to automatically spam/delete comments on posts older than 30 days. I've found that this eliminates most bots.

It that doesn't work, here's a quick tuturial for turning off comments on individual blogs posts.

Get started:
Go to the post in question, click "edit."

Step one:
Go to screen options at the very top and follow these instructions:
https://skitch.com/mclanecreative/8nmk6/edit-post-love-is-an-orientation-wordpress

Step two:
Scroll down to the bottom until you see this:
https://skitch.com/mclanecreative/8nmmj/edit-post-love-is-an-orientation-wordpress

Step three:
Scroll back to the top and click "update to save your changes:
https://skitch.com/mclanecreative/8nmmj/edit-post-love-is-an-orientation-wordpress

Step four:
Find someone and give them a high five.

That's it!

Adam McLane on "Comparing Box.com to Dropbox"

This isn't really a "how do I" question, but a number of people asked me to compare Dropbox to Box.com. (Who was giving away 50gb of storage around the release of iPhone4s and iCloud.)

Here's some quick comparisons:
Apps for iPhone, iPad - BOTH
Folder syncing apps for Windows & Mac - Dropbox (Box.com has a Windows version if you upgrade)
Free cloud storage - 50 GB for Box.com (100 MB upload max) 2 GB for Dropbox
Sharing files and folders - BOTH
Open API for developers - Box.com
Google Apps integration - Box.com

My recommendation: I have both accounts but only really use Dropbox. Box.com is just one upgrade opportunity after another. With Dropbox I've never felt like I need to upgrade to a paid account. (I've maxed out my referral link at 10 GB)

The reality is that people like simple and Dropbox is simple while Box.com isn't. Dropbox just works... no configuration or anything. Just sign up for an account and start using it. Box.com... I've fiddled with it for a while and can't figure it out fully. All I know is that everything I want to do results in me seeing the paywall and that stinks.

Here are some highlights of what to expect with the new version of WordPress.

- A newly pimped Media uploader
- Improved admin bar, because the one we have now is kind of lame.
- Fly out admin menus (Not sure I like this. I hope you can turn it off.)

Keep track of the latest stuff over on the WordPress development blog:

I completely agree with this statement:
http://www.bloggingpro.com/archives/2011/10/11/how-to-be-a-better-blogger-guaranteed/

"Sure you can get lost for a lifetime in SEO and audience development and Web analytics and about 1,000 other moving parts — but when it comes down to it, successful bloggers write great content and adhere to several basic principles."

Here's Andrew Rossen's 3 ways to build a tribe around your content:
Be Timely
Be Controversial
Give People a Takeaway

I think that's a good starting point.

I'm not sure why WordPress did this. But the ability to change a post author used to be on the post screen by default. But now it's not.

Here's how to make it visible again.
https://skitch.com/mclanecreative/f451m/turn-on-authors

1. From the post screen, click on "Screen options"
2. Check the author box
3. Do a little dance

Adam McLane on "17 Tips to Get More Exposure for Your Blog Posts"

Excellent tips at this post, a couple worth highlighting.
http://vandelaydesign.com/blog/blogging/more-exposure-for-posts/

7. Practice Writing Compelling Headlines
If you want your posts to be shared more on social media, to be linked to by more bloggers, and to be read by a higher percentage of subscribers and visitors, headlines are critical. Compelling headlines that get the attention of your audience will have a drastic impact on the amount of exposure that the posts receive.

Writing effective headlines is something that doesn’t come naturally to most of us, but it is worth the effort to learn more about how to do it.

13. Build Links to Specific Posts
When bloggers look at the subject of link building they usually consider social media marketing for specific posts, or building links from other blogs to their front page. Social media is certainly an effective way to gain exposure for your posts, but your other link building efforts don’t have to be limited to getting links to your front page.

If you have posts in your archives that have potential to draw significant traffic or to have a big impact on readers, consider making an effort to build some links to these old posts. If you have an existing network of blogging friends in the niche you may be able to find some related posts on their blogs and ask them to consider adding a link to your post. You could also go back through your own archives and look for places to include links to your key posts. Another option is sharing links to older, but important, posts via social media.

15. Write for Other Blogs
Writing guest posts for other blogs is often recommended because it is a great way to build your name recognition and to get links to your own blog or website through the author bio. In addition to linking to your blog’s front page in the bio, depending on the post you may have opportunities to link to other posts on your blog in the body of your guest post. Of course, this should only be done in situations where you are linking to highly relevant content that enhances the usefulness of your guest post, but in the right situation it can be a great way to get more exposure for a specific post on your blog.

When moving your blog, making sure everyone finds you is super important. Especially if you have an existing following.

Even if you are keeping your URL you still need to make sure that your new site is feeding your old feedburner set-up.

Here's how you do that.

Step 1: Login to Feeburner. (http://feedburner.google.com)
Step 2: Click on the blog/site that you'd like to edit.
Step 3: At the very top you'll see a link called "edit feed details..." click that bad boy.
Step 4: Delete your old original feed with your new one. If you have a WordPress blog the default is http://yourURL.com/feed
Step 5: Click "save feed details"

That's it! It should take you 5 minutes or less.

Note: It might take up to 24 hours for your RSS feed to start showing up again. And it will dump all of your current RSS feed into people's RSS reader of choice. (Defined by your WordPress settings)

I hate GoDaddy. And their ads weren't their biggest problem. It was their UI. When your UI sucks, no one likes working with you.

Hopefully the nations largest domain registrar will figure out what they are good at. And, hopefully, whomever is in charge of their user interface was just fired.

The March 2011 earthquake in Japan, much like the January 2010 in Haiti, showed the power of Twitter to get information from people to people immediately. These videos show just how much information was being shared, retweeted, and @replied to in the hours surrounding the earthquake.

Fascinating.

We recommend all WordPress users upgrade their sites from the dashboard immediately, especially if you have members logging in.

====
This release fixes an issue that could allow a malicious Editor-level user to gain further access to the site. Thanks K. Gudinavicius of SEC Consult for bringing this to our attention. Version 3.1.4 also incorporates several other security fixes and hardening measures thanks to the work of WordPress developers Alexander Concha and Jon Cave of our security team.

Here’s some of what’s new:

- Performance improvements like you wouldn’t believe. What’s that mean? Things are faster!
- Distraction-free Writing. The visual editor’s full-screen composing experience has gotten a major overhaul, and is now available from HTML mode, too. More than ever, WordPress allows you to focus on what matters most — your content.
- Admin UI Refresh. The last major redesign of the WordPress admin was in 2008. This isn’t a major redesign, just a little facelift to keep us feeling young. WordPress turns 8 later this month, you know.
- New Default Theme. Introducing Twenty Eleven, based on the popular Duster theme. Rotating header images, post format support, and more.
- Browse Happy. WordPress is made to work with modern browsers. If you visit your Dashboard using an outdated web browser, we’ll let you know there’s a newer version available.
- Admin Bar. We’ve added more links to the admin bar to make it even more useful.

Be Aware:
- WordPress has new minimum system requirements: PHP 5.2.4 and MySQL 5.0.
- Internet Explorer 6 will no longer be supported.

The favorites menu has been removed. If you’ve written any plugins that use this menu, it’s time to switch over to an admin bar placement.

From the WordPress.org blog:
http://wordpress.org/news/2011/06/passwords-reset/

Earlier today the WordPress team noticed suspicious commits to several popular plugins (AddThis, WPtouch, and W3 Total Cache) containing cleverly disguised backdoors. We determined the commits were not from the authors, rolled them back, pushed updates to the plugins, and shut down access to the plugin repository while we looked for anything else unsavory.

We’re still investigating what happened, but as a prophylactic measure we’ve decided to force-reset all passwords on WordPress.org. To use the forums, trac, or commit to a plugin or theme, you’ll need to reset your password to a new one. (Same for bbPress.org and BuddyPress.org.)

As a user, make sure to never use the same password for two different services, and we encourage you not to reset your password to be the same as your old one.

Second, if you use AddThis, WPtouch, or W3 Total Cache and there’s a possibility you could have updated in the past day, make sure to visit your updates page and upgrade each to the latest version.

The easiest (and free) option would be to use the Bit.ly service. Here's a help topic which explains what it is and how to set it up.
https://bitly.com/pages/help#i_6_0

The process is pretty easy.
1. Search for the short URL of your choice.
2. Follow the instructions and change the nameservers for your domain to Bit.ly's.
3. Follow the mapping directions at https://bitly.com/a/account

It's that simple. But if you need help, hit me up on the contact page. We'd be happy to do this for you.

When you are on Blogger.com, WordPress.com, or one of the other free blogging platforms out there you really don't have to worry too much about backing things up.

But if you're on a self-hosted WordPress install it's a good habit to occasionally back-up your blog locally.

Here's a tutorial I wrote, hopefully it'll get you going!

I'm often asked about setting up a podcast with WordPress.

Here's the plugin I recommend. I've used it a lot and never had any problems with it.
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/podpress/

You're still going to need an FTP client. But this is about as easy as it gets. Just upload the file to the directory on your server, walk through the settings, and it will give you the link to submit to iTunes.
